Topic: WE KNOW NOT WHAT WE SHOULD PRAY
Text: Romans 8:26
Minister: Dr. D.K Olukoya (G.O MFM Worldwide)
Prayer is a deep thing. It is a mysterious thing. It can remind, work in the present, can be fast forwarded. It can be like currency in the bank which you can store. Some of us are enjoying the prayers which our parents stored, in the prayer bank. So because prayer is a deep and mysterious thing, many of our modern day men do not really understand prayer. Many churches running do not understand prayer, with due respect. Some of them that understand have started praying now, and some of them that were laughing at Mountain of Fire before have started praying the same prayers they were laughing at now.
The reason they were laughing before was because they did not understand the mechanism, science and the chemistry of prayers. That is why we have:
– prayer of agreement
– United prayers
– prayer of faith
– prayer of intercession
– prayer of consecration
– prayer of worship
– prayer of confrontation
– Judgemental prayers
– Prayer of thanksgiving
– prayer of adoration
– prayer of nullification
– uprooting prayers
– back to the sender prayers
– fire for fire prayers
– mountain moving prayers
– prayer of asking
– prayer of knocking
– enquiry prayers
– prophetic prayers.
– apostolic prayer
– prayers to speak destruction
– prayers of dedication
– aggressive prayers
– travailing prayers
– those who do prayer walk
– desperate prayers
– vernacular prayers (praying in your language
– prayers of lamentation
– decreeing prayers
– Prevailing prayers
– Barricading prayers
– Warfare prayers
– Revelational prayers
– bondage breaking prayers
– Care casting prayers
– Defensive prayers
– Evangelistic praying
– geographical praying
– healing prayers
– Wordless prayers (after the order of Hannah)
– Revival prayers
– Silent prayers
– Singing prayers
– Surveillance prayers
– Wet prayers (somebody is singing in tears).
We have all these different kinds and categories of prayers because prayer is deep and mysterious. So, this strange passage we read is informing us that because of our infirmities (which are human limitations, restricted understanding), there are two (2) things we do not know:
1. The ‘what’ of prayer
2. The ‘how’ of prayer.
In other words, we do not know what to pray for, and we do not know how to pray as we should. Crudely put, we do not know the matter to pray about, we do not know the relevant method which every peculiar prayer warrants. We do not know what should make up the contents of our prayers, because what you need may not be what you want. The Bible says “there is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”.
There is a proverb that says “not all that glitters is gold”. In the spirit realm, it is not sometimes what you see physically that you attack spiritually. Jesus was looking at a woman in the temple. All others could see was a woman bent double, but Jesus saw beyond the double bending. Jesus did not say “straighten up”. He went straight and said “woman, thou art loosed!” So, she was tied. So the correct prayer is ‘be loosed’ and not ‘be straight’ or ‘walk straight’. And you know, prayers have to be specific. If it is not specific, it falls into the arena of general praying.
For the same reason, with all the shouting of blind Bartimaeus: “Son of David, have mercy upon me”, when he was brought to Jesus, strangely, Jesus asked him a strange question. “What do you want me to do for you?” Why did He ask that kind of question? Because the prayers were not specific yet. He then said “Lord, that I may receive my sight”. That was specific praying. He needed to receive his sight which had been taken away.
We do not know how to make up the contents of our prayers because of our human limitations. Sometimes when you are praying “let me go”, maybe that is not even the needed prayer. It could be “turn me to fire”, and then with that fire, whatever is holding you burns away. We do not know the manner in which some prayers are done. This is why the books on prayer are there, because a lot of people are so limited and they do not know how to construct the prayer AND what to say.
There is still a mystery and a deepness about prayer that the modern day man does not understand and it worries me when I read the Bible and find out that there is something these ancient men knew about prayer which we do not know about. There is a pattern in which those old saints walked, which we have not even discovered, not to talk of walking there. The way Elijah prayed for rain was different from the way he prayed for the dead. The way he prayed for fire to fall was different from the way he prayed for rain to fall.
The Bible did not expose to us all the wordings of Elijah’s prayers. There are things they knew about, which we do not know and that is why we are suffering. Can you raise up your voice with thunder and fire if you love your destiny and shout this at the top of your voice:
===> O God arise, damage my ignorance today, in the name of Jesus.
It is possible to be feeding your enemy fat in order to fight you.
===> That is why I am praying for somebody here: all unfriendly friends assigned to mock your destiny, with a seven-fold Amen, let them be exposed and disgraced in the name of Jesus.
The Bible says “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities…” The Spirit knows that you cannot see beyond your nose, that the dress you went to borrow has been worn to the coven. You later said “I do not know why my body is itching me” and you began to rub anointing oil on your body, whereas that is not the correct prayer. The correct prayer is that the Lord should first of all deliver you from long throat and coveting other people’s dresses; and then deliver you from the deposit of the evil prayer.
Because of these human limitations, you cannot see into the spirit realm, cannot see beyond your nose, do not even know where you are, then the Spirit helps that infirmity. How does God help our infirmities? He helps our infirmities by letting the Holy Spirit intercede for us and through us with groanings that cannot be uttered; groanings too deep for utterance.
The Bible makes us to understand in 1 Corinthians 2:11 that says “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”
It is only the Spirit that can know what is happening to you. This means several things:
1. The Holy Spirit does the praying. That is why it is important for you to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
2. The Holy Spirit knows what your spirit man wants; what the solution is.
3. The Holy Spirit searches our innermost being to know our deepest desire. Many are in trouble and when we say they should pray, they do not even know what to pray again.
4. The Holy Spirit patterns the way we pray according to the problem that we have.
5. The Holy Spirit decides the pattern, format, structure and content of the prayer. That is why the Bible tells us that sometimes God just sits down helpless because of our ignorance; because what you are saying is absolute rubbish. It is not relevant to what is even troubling your life, and you will keep saying that you prayed, whereas you could pray the wrong prayers from the cradle to the grave.
6. The Holy Spirit addresses what you cannot address, when we cannot pray in our infirmities.
So what am I trying to explain? Prayer is not merely a single weapon, but an armoury of all kinds of weapons. The Bible says in Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” – A combination of 3 things to make your request known to God: prayer, supplication and thanksgiving. Beloveth, there are different methods of prayer. You cannot subject God to test tube experience. You cannot dictate what method He should use. By looking at how Jesus healed the blind, it is instructive.
On one occasion, He made clay with saliva and put it in the eyes of the blind man. At another time, He just looked at a man and said “go wash in the pool”. At another time, He spoke the word without touching the person. At another time, He led the person out of his town and touched him twice outside the town. The blind man was there and Jesus did not pray for him in the town, He dragged him out of the town. If you are in that town that Jesus had to drag the man out of and even touched him twice, and you are praying, do not be too surprised that the prayer you are praying is swallowed up immediately you are praying.
So, a good prayer warrior who can see will know that there is no prayer that can be answered in that place. Even the King of kings and Lord of lords had to take the man out of the town. So, who are you a prayer warrior to say you are praying in that place? Then when it came to blind Bartimaeus, He just said “thy faith has made thee whole”. So, you do not see one designated method by which He was healing the blind. I am explaining all these so you can understand that there are different strategies of prayers.
The Holy Spirit could say “be jumping up as you are praying”. He could say “be clapping your hands as you are praying”. He could say “get on your knees as you are praying”. He could say “lie flat on the floor as you are praying”. Let us consider how Jesus raised the dead – For Lazarus, He publicly called Lazarus by name and asked him to step out of the tomb. In the case of Jarius’ daughter, He asked all the people to go out. He even asked some of His disciples to go out too, retaining only 3 in the room, and He prayed. Why did He chase those people out? That is a question you should ask.
We are talking about prayer. Why could He not pray in the presence of them? Why did He chase them out? Without any prior prayers, He would call people by name and then they would come out of the dead. In the case of the widow of Nain, He touched just the coffin before commanding the dead boy to rise up.
So, every battle demands its own strategy. Do not ever compare your Christian life to the life of others. Anybody who wants to be tall does not use a dwarf as a standard. You have a different background from any other person, so do not compare yourself to others.
That is why nobody comes to the Mountain of Fire by chance. If God brought you to the Mountain of Fire, it is not a mistake. He brought you there for a purpose. He has seen your destiny. He knows what prayers you need, but unfortunately the enemy catches up with some people and before they achieve victory, pushes them from the fire into the smoke. He makes them leave and then the forces that gathered before but could not get close to them in the fire will now gather seven fold more power and go to attack. Every battle has its own strategy.
Jehoshaphat was in trouble and cried to the Lord. He thought God would say “do not worry about going to that battle, I will send thunder to destroy them”. He did not tell God to hide like He sometimes told David. So Jehoshaphat was expecting those sort of instructions but what he got was strange. The Lord said “take a choir, put them at the war front and let the choir lead the war and let the armed soldiers be at the back”. What kind of method is this? But there is a reason God gave that instruction. Battle strategy. And by the time the choir started singing, the enemies waged war against themselves. They were provoked to start fighting.
They fought and destroyed themselves. The soldiers that were coming behind the choir just came only to divide the spoils. This is a very, very serious matter.
===> I am praying for somebody here, any invisible power shooting arrows at you shall destroy themselves in the name of Jesus.
Every battle has its own relevant strategy and prayers. When satan comes to manifest as accuser of the brethren, the appropriate weapons are the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. When he comes as a roaring lion, the weapons are soberness and vigilance. When he comes as a mountain, the weapon is to cast it into the sea. God knows the sea to send them into. When he comes as an unprofitable tree, the prayer is to dry it to the roots. When he comes as eaters of flesh and drinkers of blood, the weapon is for them to eat their own flesh and drink their own blood.
===> I am praying for somebody, I do not know whom you are, but God will release thundering fire upon all evil gatherings against you, in the name of Jesus!
This is where we are going to stop tonight.
1. Power to pray and get results, I am available, come upon my life, in the name of Jesus.
2. O God arise, increase my prayer fire in the name of Jesus.
3. Battles assigned to hold me down in the wrong place, you are liars, die in the name of Jesus.
4. Brothers of Joseph in my father’s house, scatter in the name of Jesus.
5. Lion of Judah, arise! Roar, destroy all my testimony killers, in the name of Jesus.
6. Wherever the enemy has stopped me, I get out of it tonight, in the name of Jesus.
God bless you 🙏
